Describe the exposure clearly
Record whether furniture is under cover, exposed to direct sun, near a pool or close to the sea. Include the periods when it will be stored or left outside. Ask the manufacturer for information relevant to the complete product in that setting, including fasteners and coatings. A material name alone does not establish the performance of every joint, finish or cushion in the assembled piece.
Review the full material combination
Check frame, tabletop, upholstery, foam, fixings and glides as one specification. Ask how rainwater drains and how cushions are handled after wet weather. Review samples in the intended light and request the supplier’s care instructions. Avoid treating all outdoor fabrics or metals as interchangeable: the exact product, finish and maintenance routine need to be stated in the approved order.
Plan handling, storage and site conditions
Discuss whether staff move furniture daily or store it seasonally. Check stacking arrangements, protective separators and available storage space. The site team should assess exposure, stability and any anchoring needs with a qualified adviser. Parasols, high terraces and other specialist conditions need a separate brief; a furniture quotation should not silently assume that every site-related issue has already been resolved.
Build maintenance into the handover
Request identifiable spare parts and written instructions for cleaning, storage and touch-up where applicable. An illustrative terrace package might include spare glides and a cushion storage plan rather than extra complete chairs. Confirm packaging protects the selected surfaces during transit. Record condition on receipt and agree how transport damage or missing parts will be reported before the furniture is put into service.
Project checklist
Before requesting a quotation
- Location, exposure and seasonal use
- Complete material and fixing specification
- Storage, handling and specialist site review
- Care instructions and agreed spare components
A useful question
Can furniture described as outdoor stay outside all year?
Do not assume so. Ask about the exact product’s intended use, exposure limits and care requirements. The site climate, storage arrangements and maintenance plan should be reviewed before committing to a year-round installation.
